Photography of Horses at the Racecourse

Photos of moving objects require more advanced skills. They require different camera settings. And, photography of all moving objects is not the same. It takes special skills to take photos of the Winx racehorse.

For example, photography of moving race bikes or Formula 1 cars lapping a race track is different from photography at a racecourse. Bikes and Formula 1 cars will lap more than 50 times during the course of a race making it is possible for the photographer to move around the track waiting for that perfect shot. While on the racecourse, the horses do not lap, it is almost impossible to change position and there is very little time to take a shot.

Special Characteristic of Shooting a Racecourse

There is a big difference between taking a still photo and a moving photo. Besides a few changes in settings of a camera, it also requires special skill.

Special features for shooting at a racecourse:

· It is advisable to shoot from under a railing.

· Flash photography is usually banned at all races.

· Sudden moments or getting too close to the track can potentially distract the horses, hence it is to be avoided at all costs.

· Use your instincts and quick reactions to take splendid snaps.

· There is little time to follow a process or analyse a scene; since if you blink you will miss the shot.

· Patience is rewarded; waiting for a good scene and perfect lighting (in this case sunlight) may help one take good shots.

· Shooting at a racecourse involves analysing the path of sunlight depending on the time of the day and any shadows that it will cast.

· Instead of taking a simple shot of a racehorse in motion, it may be a good idea to take snaps that also suggest meaning or story.

Best Camera Setup

· It is necessary to use shutter speed priority setting on a camera. Almost all DSLR's have such settings.

· ISO setting plays a big role as well. The lower this setting will be, the less grainy the picture.

· Aperture setting also matters; it helps set the depth of the field and influence the blur in the photo. It is useful in focusing on the desired object too.
